The Griffin's Feather

Author: Cornelia Rider

Series: Dragon Rider #2

This is a middle-grade series. It's a very cute story.

We follow Ben, he has been living a very enjoyable life with his adoptive parents and sibling. He gets the best of both worlds really and has a nice little family in a farm type of house. His family helps magical creatures they come across and hides them from the vast majority of humankind.

It starts off with finding Pegasus (winged horses) these creatures are almost extinct. Ben and his family are trying to take care of three eggs the Pegasus couple has. The humans and creatures around them are trying to save the young foals in their eggs.

Of course, a very wise being suggests the cure to their ailment, a Griffin's Sun-feather. The catch? Griffins are known to be cruel, greedy creatures who hate all types of Equidae, so the probability of a griffin wanting to help a winged horse is very slim. And the other common knowledge about griffins with the heads of eagles and bodies of lions, are a dragon's fiercest enemy, and live far across the world in the sweltering jungle.

Ben decides to lie to his silver dragon, after all, he doesn't want his best friend to risk himself to help them on their quest. The fellowship for the retrieval mission consists of Ben, the homunculus, and a troll called Hothbrodd among other new characters that we will see added throughout the story.

So Ben starts off his new adventure after giving his Silver dragon companion a white lie. The boy does not want the dragon to risk himself. The book is a very enjoyable adventure, we see them meet new people, and fight amongst each other because they're worried and scared, but their friendship comes up on top.

One of the new characters is a great example of "do not judge everyone based on the stereotypes". They meet a Griffin, but she is not only after gold, and killing dragons is not appealing to her.

It does read young, but the target audience is middle-grade so that's not a bad thing. The plot is very predictable:

-They go out in search with close to no clue where they are going.

-Almost instantly they find someone who heard a rumor and they follow that one lead.

-The Griffins are not mythical creatures they are quite real.

-They are over their heads on the hunt for the feather. The danger comes up to them and the deceit is revealed to the Silver Dragon. The poor dragon feels betrayed and has an existential crisis and fears that all those rumors about humans being selfish and deceitful are true.

It contains a great example of a found family but the main focus was on the search for the Griffin. Unlike the previous book, the traveling time is cut short, so you get to explore fewer places.

This book is going to be used for several of the challenges:

  • A-to-Z for author and book titles

  • Read around the world - the user is from Germany.

  • 2023 Fantasy Challenge: this is the next book in a series.

We are definitely starting strong this 2023
