Review:
I recently read The Devotion of Suspect X and found it to be a fascinating mystery novel. It had a unique blend of both familiar and unusual elements, which kept me intrigued throughout the entire story. The approach taken by the author was simply astonishing, and I was completely caught off guard by the unexpected twists and turns. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery and wants to be surprised by the outcome.
The ending was close to perfection, until those two pages. If you have a takeaway from me, be aware, if you have this book then let's leave it at page 296- do NOT go to 298-299, please.
This is really gripping, it's a real page-turner! It's interesting because it starts off with a few hours in the lives of the main characters, and then suddenly takes a dark turn with an intense emotional scene that leads to a murder. I don't want to give away too much, but it really keeps you on the edge of your seat. I couldn't wait to see where the story went next, I ended up reading it in a single day!
I was afraid that my intrigue would be dampened if I already I already knew all the answers to the 'who-what-where-why-when?' However, Hiashino's writing is so masterful that he manages to keep the disposition of the body shrouded in mystery. As a reader, I felt like I was in a unique position of being ahead of the police in terms of knowing where the investigation should end, but also discovering new clues alongside them as they worked backward. It was a thrilling and engaging reading experience.
I couldn't put the book down as I read through the pages, trying to piece together the events of the crime. The author masterfully shifts between the perspective of the police investigators and the perpetrators, keeping me on my toes throughout. It felt like a game of chess, with each move carefully calculated and strategized. I was left in awe of the intricate plot and the skillful writing that brought it to life.
It was such a fun ride, as we get only tiny bits of information and just see the whole thing take shape, it was a nice take of a crime thriller. This time we know the truth but we are encouraging the criminals so they can guide the police investigation away from the truth.
