Book Description: Louise gets a call from her son, Jonas. It's every parent's worst nightmare: A school party has ended in terrifying chaos after a group of violent teenagers forced their way into the building in search of alcohol and valuables. Dashing to the scene, Louise discovers one of the students gravely injured--struck by a car while attempting to run for help. Now the girl's distraught mother, pushed to her emotional breaking point, will do anything to make those who hurt her daughter pay.

So when someone targets the gang members with a vicious attack, the girl's mother is the obvious suspect. But Louise can't shake the feeling that the case might not be as cut-and-dried as it first appears. Someone is lying--but who?

Thoughts:

Note: There should be a warning about suicide, and also it needs to be said that the way it was portrayed is probably not the best. It does give the impression that suicide was a good or beautiful ending to someone's life. Not the best way to handle it in my opinion.

This is a quick read, but in terms of crime thriller or detective stories, it's just middle of the road. The characters are meant to be likable and I feel some attachment, I wanted to know how Louise was going to take care of the boy she has been put in charge of.

It starts off with Lousie being called into a party where her foster son Jonas was in attendance. A few teenagers decided to crash the party, and intimidate the guests; and when they did not get what they wanted the thing got out of hand and they started to attack the only adult in the room. While running for help for her mom, Britt, ran out into the road in front of a van and was hit. With both mother and daughter in the hospital and the father out of town, Louise and her fellow police try to find the older boys who invaded the party. Meanwhile, Louise still has her own job to take care of, she gets the task of investigating a case of a man's death and the burndown of his warehouse.

This story has a mix of plot and character development. Louise is trying to find herself as a mother figure, as she never wanted to part-take in the motherhood department. We also see Camilla and her own struggles to face the guilt she feels for the death of a man. The events of the previous book. So the two friends are facing their demons on their own and still guiding their respective sons. It touches on subjects about figuring out their life goals and where they see themselves in the future, we see them struggle with their decisions to determine if their careers or family life should be the priority, and face misogynistic men in their respective workplaces. I like the idea behind them but the execution did not inspire me or really move me, the topics shown and their struggles made me annoyed because I simply could not stand it, but it was not something awe-inspiring.

The audiobook was well done and I was able to get through it in a single day. Mostly because it's something I can have in the background as I do mindless tasks. It was predictable and I was not sure on par on how many aspects were portrayed. But if you just want to read another episode of Louise solving a mystery then it should be a good enough ride.
