Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

This book was picked because it has queer representation, Latin heritage representation.

Orilium Cunjuration - O- The Foundation of necromancy. Book with necromancy themes.

Review:

I am not the target audience, but it's still plenty of people who really enjoy it. It's ok- just nothing mind-blowing. I will not be continuing the series.

The theme was very interesting, but it did not live up to its full potential.

Representation in this book, we have a vegan girl who refuses to become a healer because in order to do that she needs to use animal blood- so it's against her beliefs. We have Yadariel- he is a trans boy. His family is "trying" to come to terms with his identity but they tend to revert back to the use of wrong pronouns and even dead naming but they continue to try to be supportive. They do not outright deny or exclude him. The one thing he faces is the fact that he is denied being accepted 100% he is not allowed to take his presentation and assignment of his heritage- the family doesn't allow him to partake in the male side as they expect him to fail at it. That is the main downside of having a language and a heritage that is so heavily based on genre.

It is a quick read, and easy to get through. The worldbuilding of a brujx and their community. The healing ability, the ability to see ghosts, help them move on and their culture towards the Santa muerte.

We do have the buzz words I navigate towards: found family, good queer representation, Latin heritage representation, supportive blood family.

We have enough clues to be sure where the overall plot is going. The plot is not the main focus, we're supposed to be enchanted by the characters. It was a very predictable plot and the ending was a bit too convenient. The romance story is the one I didn't enjoy much, and overall it was ok. It just felt like the story was dragging and nothing was happening- or more like we have a promising start with a plot starting to show its first rays. then for 85% of the book we have a focus on the romance- that was what lost me mostly. I wish we had more time to develop the plot, explore more of the relationships - family like Yadriel and his older brother, father, his aunts- or about Julian and his friends. There were so many other options.

I would recommend picking it up. There is plenty of people enjoying it to go for it!

I read this in a single day, so that's good.

Positive Representation: Trans, gay, vegan. The relationship between Yadrieal and his father is very good example of many latinx children and their parents- especially if they're part of the LGBT+.
