August DNFs

So the fear of putting books down. The fear of leaving a book unfinished are plenty.

What are the fears?

-Can I count this book if I did not finish it all?

YES! I did ready part of it. There are no specific rules in the counting or not the DNFs. Everything is subjective. The main thing to remember there are too many works out there, so why do you have to continue something you are not enjoying? Whatever the reason may be- problematic themes, issues with the format or disconnect from the story and characters.

Lets try to continue enjoying our hobby no reason to do something we don't like simply for competitions' sake.

The following books are the ones I gave up.

This is not the first book, so that is my fault.

The characters felt bland, maybe the author counts on the previous exposure the readers had in the 2 previous works. Or what is more likely the character is unlikable.

Main reasons to give up:

-The character was annoying, winy and I did not care one way or the other about what happens to them.

-The plot felt tried and predictable, I didn't stay long enough to verify my theories and the interest was so low by the time I put it down that I didn't even look for spoiler reviews to see if I was right or not.

I am on the lookout for historical fiction- I just need to find my niche on it.

The second book

Confession:

I knew nothing about the book, it was in the library and its the winner of the Pulitzer prize. Mistake it was not for me really.

The story feels forced. It could have been great- we have two young men facing struggles in their lives- fleeing from WWII, separated from the family: find their spot in life; realize their dreams as artist and to top it off they are trying to create and find success as graphic novels in the golden age of comics. It ends up feeling meh.

Characters are unlikable, the awesome opportunities, Czechs have an amazing rich culture and unique. But it was simply glossed over and yet some more uninteresting aspects took the spot light. It feels like it promises a lot and it disappoints.

This were some of the most disappointments of this year.
